Opposition to Obama's Use of Executive Privilege

Last week, the Obama administration asserted executive privilege to withhold Department of Justice documents related to a controversial initiative carried out by the Drug Enforcement Administration known as “Fast and Furious.”

A majority say that Obama's use of executive privilege was either an abuse of power (17 percent) or hypocritical based on his campaign promise to curtail the use of executive privilege (34 percent). While this may be a troubling sign for an incumbent president seeking reelection, other online conversations point to how many view this issue was overly politicized. An estimated 33 percent of online mentions think that the controversy has been blown out of proportion, while 17 percent think the administration was forced to act as it did.

NYC's Soda Ban a Bust

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's recent proposal to ban the sale of large containers of soda has the general public torn. While 36 percent of online conversations taking the ban with a grain of salt and add their own comedic commentary on the issue, others are more concerned about the implications of the ban.

Many Discouraged by Financial Culture

Yesterday, a former Goldman Sachs executive published a dramatic op-ed in the New York Times that expressed his discontent with the current state of the financial industry. His bold damnation of Goldman’s business practices were widely shared across the internet shortly after it was published. Approximately 37% of online conversations regarding the letter thought financial culture has become a mess and another 34% thought the letter was appalling.
