Online Mentions Show Negative Outlook for Penn State Football

Following the NCAA’s announcement of its sanctions against Penn State football in the wake of the child sexual abuse scandal involving the former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky, tens of thousands of people took to social media channels to express their opinions of the punishment. The sanctions include negating all of the program’s victories starting in 1998, when university officials first learned of, and overlooked, allegations against Sandusky. A report commissioned by Penn State’s board of trustees and conducted by a group led by the former F.B.I. director Louis J. Freeh revealed a series of failures by university leadership.
 
Roughly half of the mentions online express a negative outlook for the Penn State football program. Of this large group of mentions, nearly 30% expressed concerns that the punishment was too severe. About a fifth of mentions suggested the punishment would be too much for the program to ever overcome.
 
Still, the largest segment of sentiment -- one third of all mentions – supported the punishment, suggesting that it was fair given the nature of the crime and the apparent effort to cover it up.
