During the week leading up to the Democratic National Convention – also the week that the Republicans held their convention in Tampa – the overall volume of social media conversations around the conventions was relatively low and focused on broad themes.

Of the nearly 167,000 conversations on Twitter, Facebook, blogs and forums, 37 percent related to the Republican convention or its speakers (often using common conservative or Republican hashtags).

The remaining conversations focused on policy issues to be discussed at the Democratic convention (28 percent), high-profile speakers other than President Obama (21 percent) and speculation about Obama’s speech (14 percent).
